I was pleased to virtually present a talk and discussion on the history of Canada-U.S. trade negotiations to the Fellows of the Royal Society of Arts. This follows on the book of the same title I edited in 2019 subsequent to the signing of the United States Mexico Canada Trade Agreement at the time.

This was a highly relevant presentation given the current global chaos instigated by the current U.S. Administration’s tariff policy. Global trade and commerce are in a state of turmoil from this trade war. I explained the purpose of trade treaties, why they are relevant, their limitations, and the current context and consequences for both Canada and the world of today’s activity in the area.
I believe knowing historical trade negotiations and agreements provides tremendous insight into managing today’s challenges. Upon revisiting the book, I highly recommend reading the Introductory chapter, and was impressed by the prescient insights of The Honourable Jean Charest in his chapter ‘Shaping a Free Trade Agreement: The Role of the Private Sector’.
