National Capital Commission Selects Site for LGBTQ Monument

The National Capital Commission’s (NCC) Board of Directors approved a site for the proposed LGBTQ2+ National Monument, located on the north-east side of the intersection of Wellington Street and the Portage Bridge, near Library and Archives Canada headquarters and the Ottawa River. I am pleased to be a member of the LGBTQ National Monument Committee that participated in the selection of this site and made recommendations to the NCC.

As can be seen in the accompanying map, the selected site is beside Library and Archives Canada.

This is a very exciting step forward in creating the LGBTQ2+ National Monument. The next step will be a call for design proposals this spring, based again on the recommendations finalized by the LGBTQ National Monument Committee. The final design will be selected in the summer of 2021.

I look forward to this next stage and seeing the various design proposals that are submitted.

The LGBGQ2+ National Monument will memorialize the historical discrimination against LGBTQ2+ Canadians, including the LGBT Purge.
